Before starting Sketch for the first time, grant it permission to send messages (then you can txt your pics to your friends) and to read/write to your memory card (so you can use photos as the background to your sketches and save your artwork). Your phone's manual will tell you how to do this.

Using Sketch is really easy: all you need to learn is what the different keys do and a couple of functions that are on the main menu.

There are 4 different drawing modes:
-line drawing
-shape drawing
-adding stampers
-moving the cursor

The # key cycles through these modes. At any time, you can see which mode you are in by the symbol on the right side of the toolbar at the top of your screen. It will either display a line, a shape, a stamper or show nothing if Sketch is in 'move cursor' mode. To change modes, just keep pressing the # key until you arrive at the mode you want.

Depending on the particular drawing mode, you can use the number 3 and 9 keys to choose different line styles, shapes or stampers. Pressing 3 will move up through the various choices, number 9 will take you the other way.

-For lines, you can choose between solid and dotted.
-For shapes, select either rectangles, ellipses or triangles. A rectangle or an ellipse can be either solid or open, triangles are always solid.
-For stampers, you have a wide choice of available stampers to suit every occasion.

In addition to the drawing modes, there are 3main settings:
-color - the foreground color, that is of the line or shape.
-bkgnd - the background color.
-speed - the speed of the cursor as it moves across the screen.

You can change any one of these settings by pressing the * key until its name appears on the toolbar. Then use the number 1 and 7 keys to cycle through the different options. The speed of the cursor is shown as a number on the toolbar (10=slowest; 90=fastest). The current foreground and background colors are also shown on the toolbar. You can also change all 3 settings at once by selecting 'Settings' from the main menu.

To draw a line in a particular direction, press either the up, down, left or right buttons on your navigation controller (or 2, 8, 4 and 6 keys). Draw diagonal lines by pressing two of the buttons or keys at the same time. Keep the button or key held down until the line is the length you want.

To make a shape, move the cursor by pressing the up, down, left or right button (or 2, 8, 4 and 6 key) and the shape will open out. Release the button or key when the shape is the right size.

To add a stamper, move the cursor to the desired location and press the navigation controller's 'fire' button (or 5 key).

In the final drawing mode, you can move the cursor without leaving any trace of line drawing or shapes by using the navigation buttons or movement keys.

You can add a background image, such as a photo, to your sketch. Select the 'Background Image' item from the main menu. You will then be prompted to navigate through the folders on your phone and its memory card. Use the 'Open' command to drill down into a folder. When you have found the image that you want to use, press the 'Select' command. Depending on your particular phone and its permission settings you may be prompted with a security check each time you change folders. Newer phones allow the use of jpg, gif and png file types whereas older phones may only allow png images.

Having created your masterpiece, you will want to save the sketch or txt it to your friends. To save the picture, select the 'Save' command from the main menu. You will be prompted to select a folder on your phone or memory card. Use the 'Open' command to go into a folder and 'Select' to choose the one that you want. Having selected the folder, you must type the name for the file. The image will be stored in png format and will be available to other applications on your phone.

To txt your sketch, both your phone and the contract with your phone operator must allow the sending of picture messages through MMS. Select the 'Send MMS' item from the menu. Enter the phone number to which you want to send your message. After selecting the phone number field, you may be able to use the phone's address book. You can also add a subject and some notes to your message. When you have completed all the fields, press the 'Send' command button. Depending on your phone's security settings, you may be asked for permission to send the message.
